Neoplan Buses

Neoplan Buses found its beginnings in 1935 manufacturing body work for truck and bus chassis. Right from the start, Neoplan was about style. They were amongst the pioneers of the all steel bus body post World War II. It wasn’t long before the technical expertise demonstrated by the design of Neoplans became renowned. Around 1953, they implemented a partial monocoque design for neoplanbuses. The monocoque design uses the body to support the structure as opposed to internal support beams. They further innovated by moving the engine to the rear of Neoplan bus design, and added air suspension in the late 50’s to improve the comfort of the ride.

In the 60’s, the Hamburg model was designed, which featured air vents so that riders could regulate their fresh air supply. This was an innovation at the time. It also had a new, structural design which departed from the status quo. Another new model, the Neoplan Skyliner, was designed in the mid 60’s that was a Neoplan double decker. It was remarkably light for it’s class, and could carry 100 passengers. Its low floor design contributed to the relatively compact size in the behemoth class. This bus turned out to be revolutionary in that is was both a comfortable touring bus and extremely high capacity. This double deck coach also solidified the company’s identity as an engineering expert, and put them in a class apart from other European manufacturing companies.

In the early 70’s, the Cityliner model hit the scene. It featured a restroom (a big deal at the time), and a specially constructed plastic that was used for some parts of the body, reinforced by a glass-fibre material. The Jetliner soon followed, featuring a single front windshield. In the mid 70’s, arguably one of the most gargantuan models ever created was introduced. The Neoplan Jumbocruiser was an articulated double decker bus. Articulated buses are so long that they have a flexible connecting area to separate the bus into two coaches. This allows for maneuverability on the roads. Hence, a double deck, double coach bus. It seated 80 passengers. The Neoplan Spaceliner was introduced in the late 70’s. It featured an extended upper level, but still kept the overall low floor level design, thus further optimizing internal space.

The 80’s saw plant expansion, thus allowing for more manufacturing of models of Neoplan for sale. In four years (roughly 10% of the company’s history at that point), three new plants were established, which doubled the number of existing plants at the time. It was perfect timing, because the UK made changes to its transit regulations to allow more freedom for companies to provide service for long distance trips, and Neoplans were already well prepared to provide that kind of service. Thus, there was suddenly a great demand for Neoplans in the UK.

Other Neoplan busses of note are the Neoplan Starliner, the Neoplan Megaliner, and the Neoplan Transliner. The Neoplan Starliner was put out in 96 and won bus of the year, two years in a row. The Neoplan Megaliner was a 15 meter long, non-articulated bus. So powerful was Neoplans sway, that they actually affected a change in EU regulations to allow this bus on the road. Previously, non-articulated buses could not exceed 12 meters in length. The Neoplan Transliner was exceptionally popular in the USA, and was manufactured both by the main company and a spinoff, aptly named Neoplan USA. It is notable because it represents but a small portion of the overall business, and yet was immensely popular in the US.
